Snow Day Calculator
Find out the chance of your school being closed due to snow.
How to Use the Snow Day Calculator
Our Snow Day Calculator is a simple tool designed to help you estimate whether school might be closed due to winter weather. Here’s how it works:
Enter Your Zip or Postal Code
- Start by typing in your Zip Code (U.S.) or Postal Code (Canada).
- This field is mostly for context — in this demo version, it isn’t tied to live weather data.
Add the Expected Snowfall
- Enter the amount of snowfall in inches you think your area will receive.
- The higher the snowfall, the more likely schools are to shut down.
- Example: If you expect 6–8 inches, your chances are much higher than if you only expect 1–2 inches.
Include the Temperature
- Input the forecasted temperature (°F).
- Colder temperatures (below freezing at 32°F) make snow and ice stick longer, which increases the likelihood of school closures.
- Milder temperatures mean roads may clear faster, lowering your snow day chances.
Select Your School Type
- Choose between Public, Private, or Boarding school:
- Public Schools: Usually more cautious with closures.
- Private Schools: Often close a bit quicker.
- Boarding Schools: Less likely to close since students live on campus.
Hit the “Calculate” Button
- Once you’ve filled everything out, click the purple Calculate button.
- The calculator will give you a percentage showing the chance of having a snow day.
- Example: “Snow Day Chance: 65%”
How Does It Work Behind the Scenes?
- The calculator employs a straightforward formula that considers snowfall, temperature, and school type.
- More snow = higher probability.
- Lower temperatures = higher probability.
- School type adjusts the numbers slightly up or down.
- The result is capped between 0% (no chance) and 100% (guaranteed snow day).
Important to Know
- This tool is meant for fun and rough estimation.
- It doesn’t pull real-time forecasts — so if you want accuracy, check your local weather app or news.
- Think of it as a playful way to guess whether you’ll get that surprise day off!
